Warrior Volleyball Falls to Bethel University

— In its concluding match at the Puget Sound Premier, the Corban University volleyball team fell to Bethel University (Minn.) in four sets (25-22, 25-27, 14-25, 12-25) on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors registered 36 kills and shot a 0.128 hitting percentage in the defeat.

Trailing 7-13 in the opening set, Corban (3-4) amplified its offensive aggressiveness and responded with a 10-4 run capped off by a service ace by sophomore setter Mikenzee Frazier (Lebanon, Ore.). A kill by senior outside hitter Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) brought the Warriors to within one (20-21), and after a Corban serving error, Bethel (3-1) would go on to commit five straight errors, granting Corban the first set, 25-22.

A wild second set featured nine ties and eight lead changes. With Corban trailing, 12-13, a kill and a service ace by freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.), as well as an attack error by Bethel, gave the Warriors their largest lead of the set at 15-13. After a service ace by freshman middle blocker Sloane Morrison (Edmonds, Wash.) brought Corban to set point (24-22), Bethel responded with three straight points to reclaim the advantage. Hill dialed in another kill to re-tie the match, but Bethel ended up taking the set, 27-25, shifting the momentum.

In the third set, the Warriors managed to initiate a 7-5 lead after freshman setter Rachel Smith (Moscow, Idaho) set up Hill for a kill. However, Bethel would go on to score the next 10 points to claim the lead for good and Corban lost the set, 14-25.

The Warriors only managed to register five kills and a 0.094 hitting percentage in the fourth set. A service ace by Morrison helped the Warriors to its only tie of the set at 3-3, but Bethel responded with a 14-4 run to take control of the match. Corban ultimately came up short in the decisive set, 12-25.

As a team, the Navy and Gold tallied eight service aces, 33 assists, and 60 digs. Hill continued her torrid offensive pace, registering her third-straight double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Miah Smith chipped in eight kills and five digs, while Haley Meili added 24 assists and four digs. Moreover, libero Katherine Salness compiled 14 digs on the afternoon.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Hill was named to the All-Tournament Team for her fantastic efforts on the court.

Corban opens up conference play on Sept. 4, as the Warriors take on Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore. at 7:00 p.m.
