(NEWBERG, Ore.) — George Fox University's women's soccer team hosted Chapman University in its second home game of the season, Monday morning.
Becca Allen led the attack for the Bruins firing off three shots with two of them on goal. Ally Swanson received the start in the net and recorded four saves on the day, while allowing one goal.
Swanson had a busy first half, as the Panthers were able to get off seven shots. She came out and made a diving save late in the first half, but the deflection would find the feet of Panther' Rebeccah Bortz, who found the back of the net and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
"In both games that we've played our team has continued to show their heart," said head coach Cory Hand. "Both games finished with us pressing hard, relentlessly to score and to finish to the very end. We also showed that we are deep this year in talent. The pre-season for us is about getting our large class of 10 new players to mix with our current and come out with a strong chemistry and a new solid consistent identity."
The second half was a battle of possession and force, as each team went back and forth with great opportunities. The Panthers were heavy handed with strong play as they recorded 14 fouls in the game, while the Bruins had just five.
"We knew that Chapman would challenge us and provide quality competition," said Hand. "Prior to playing us this season they had already picked up 2 big victories, 1 against the #13 team in the nation and 12x NWC Champions University of Puget Sound, and the second against top in the NWC Lewis and Clark. This game provided a lot of opportunity for our team to challenge our depth and help set a tone for the level of play we are choosing to achieve this season."
The Bruins fall to 0-1-1 on the season and will enjoy a week and a half off before taking to the road on Sept. 12 against Whittier College.
