(SALEM, Ore.) — With one week until the Great Eclipse here are some things to plan for.
Traffic should increase as the week progresses and eclipse visitors begin to arrive. Beyond traffic their could be cell phone and atm issues as the numbers grow beyond what the local infrastructure was meant to support.
The Salem Police department will be conducting pedestrian crosswalk safety campaigns. Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and for passing a stopped vehicle at a crosswalk are class B violations and carry a fine of up to $260.00.
Video cameras will be used to capture the violations and those that are contacted will be able to view the violation on video.
Oregon law requires all drivers to stop prior to entering a crosswalk for pedestrians who are crossing the street in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Drivers are required to stop if a pedestrian is either in the lane in which the driver's vehicle is traveling or in a lane adjacent to the lane in which the driver's vehicle is traveling.
The weather has made a change which will be appreciated by fire fighters. Governor Kate Brown today authorized the Oregon National Guard to provide additional resources to support fire suppression across the state. Approximately 125 additional service members are scheduled to be activated Monday, Aug. 14.
Additionally, Governor Brown has requested MEDEVAC support Oregon Department of Forestry for wildfires in Southwest Oregon. An HH-60M Black Hawk and crew are based out of the Deibert Flight Facility, in Salem, Oregon. The Oregon Guard volunteers are scheduled to equip, train and mobilize with training taking place at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training in Salem before moving forward to support first responders by Wednesday, Aug. 16.
