Fatal Plane Crash in Salem

(SALEM, Ore) — UPDATE: The Salem police tell us that the victim in this incident has now been identified as 60-year old John Douglas Layton of Salem.

Mr. Layton was the pilot and sole occupant of the airplane.

The investigation will continue with the National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) as the primary investigating agency.

Origanal Story: At approximately 8:26 am Salem Police and Fire Departments received calls of a plane crash north of the runway on the Salem airport grounds.

Witnesses reported that a small plane was attempting to takeoff northbound when it crashed north of the runway and burst into flames.

The flames were extinguished quickly by fire units and it was determined that there is at least one deceased victim in the plane.

NTSB is investigating, and we will update you when they learn more.
