The men reported they were wearing inadequate clothing for the conditions and carrying no supplies.
(SALEM, Ore) — Yesterday at about 5:00 p.m., two hikers called for help after becoming lost on a day trip.
Alex Solomon, age 20 and Tyde Kaneshiro, age 21, both of Eugene were hiking near Mount Jefferson when they became lost.
The men reported they were wearing inadequate clothing for the conditions and carrying no supplies.
Luckily, Solomon and Kaneshiro were able to call 911 using their cell phone allowing searchers to obtain their GPS coordinates.
At about 1:00 a.m., both men were found uninjured and next to a warming fire on the Triangulation Peak trail head.
Both Kaneshiro and Solomon used the trail head sign as firewood to stay warm.
Because of the hiker's lack of supplies and the overnight temperature of 20 degrees, rescuers were forced into action.
To rescue the hikers, SAR members had to hike 13 miles round trip, in the dark, over uneven and icy terrain.
The Sheriff's Office wants to remind hikers to dress for the conditions and always be prepared for at least one over night stay when hiking in the wilderness.
