Conrad Engweiler was released in the early morning hours Thursday
(SALEM, Ore) — Conrad Engweiler in prison for the 1990 sexual assault and murder of his 16 year old Sunset High School classmate, was released on parole early this morning.
The Oregon Board of Parole finalized the convicted killer's release date, according to the board's order of supervision, made public on Tuesday.
When the board decided at the beginning of September to grant parole to Engweiler, it pushed his release several weeks out to allow time for the inmate to make a release plan.
Engweiler will be under the supervision of Deshutes County Adult Parole and Probation.
His "active supervision period" will last for at least three years.
Engweiler, who strangled Erin Tonna Reynolds when he was 15, has served about 24 years and 8 months in custody.
Upon release, Engweiler is required to register as a sex offender.
He is banned from having any contact with his victim's family.
Engweiler was convicted of aggravated murder, rape and sodomy in 1991.
The board's decision to free him followed an exit interview hearing in May and another hearing in August.
Tonya Gushard, with Oregon Dept. of Corrections, tells Salem News Journal that Engweiler held a job and stayed out of trouble while he was incarcerated.
When asked about his plans for the future he simply said "to do good do good and give back to the community".
