— Two people were injured Thursday just after noon when the small car they were in was struck by a westbound Portland and Western train in Hillsboro.

As Hillsboro firefighters arrived on scene, they found a 2008 Toyota Corolla about 100-feet west of the intersection of River Road and TV Highway.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle, but firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free the passenger from the vehicle.

The 82-year-old passenger was taken by Life Flight helicopter to OHSU Trauma Center suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The 85-year-old driver was also transported to OHSU by Metro West Ambulance. He had non-life threatening injuries, fire officials said.

The Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team, federal rail safety officials and Hillsboro police will conduct a joint investigation of the accident.

One eastbound lane of TV Highway may be obstructed for several hours during the investigation.
