(SALEM, Ore) — Salem Public Works Dispatch has received approximately 20 calls related to intersection flooding Wednseday morning.
Crews responded to and addressed all reported issues.
Leaves are starting to fall and the combination of fallen leaves and rain leads to clogged storm drains and local street flooding.
Salem's street sweepers are running around the clock.
Last year during the fall season, the City's street sweeping program collected more than 4,700 cubic yards of leaves, or the equivalent of 470 dump trucks, while clearing the streets of leaf debris.
Residents can lend a hand in preventing local flooding by adopting a storm drain and keeping it clear of leaves.
If you see leaves accumulate in your neighborhood storm drain, follow these steps to help keep the drains clear:
1. Grab a rake, gloves, boots, and a bin or bag to collect the leaves.
2. Rake leaves off the storm drain and put them into your yard waste bin, compost pile, or bag them for later disposal.
The City's Fall Leaf Haul is scheduled for December 6, 2014.
Remember to keep safety in mind: never remove the storm drain cover and be sure to remain on the curb when collecting leaves.
If standing water persists after debris has been removed, call City of Salem Public Works Dispatch at 503-588-6333.
