— On Wednesday, October 15, Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore announced the promotion of Lt. Skip Miller to the position of Deputy Chief.

Deputy Chief Miller is a 17-year veteran of the department, having started his law enforcement career in 1997.

Previous to that Miller had a career in the United States Army as a sergeant in the 101st Airborne Division.

During his tenure with the department, Miller has been a member of the SWAT and Mobile Response Teams.

He was awarded Officer of the Year in 2002 and was instrumental in establishing the Salem Police Department Honor Guard.

He is a graduate of Western Oregon University, the FBI National Academy and a recipient of the US Army Bronze Star for combat in Operation Desert Storm.

His interest in the police field was piqued during his time at WOU.

Through the university, Miller received an internship with the Salem Police Department which solidified his career path. "after being here as an intern, I knew this is where I wanted to work," shared the new Deputy Chief.

Said Chief Moore of the promotion, "Deputy Chief Miller has prepared himself well for the promotion to his new position.

He has been involved in a wide variety of assignments within the department, has developed relationships with a variety of community and intergovernmental partners and clearly understands the importance of his new assignment and role."

 He added, "I am confident he will be a strong member of our command staff."

The announcement came with Chief Moore re-swearing Miller into his new position.

Effective November 3, Deputy Chief Miller will command the Investigations Division of the department.
