Woman Charged With Manslaughter in Death of Child

On October 7, 2014, an Indictment was filed in Marion County Circuit Court charging Mercedes Alvarado with Manslaughter in the Second Degree. Mercedes Alvarado, 25, is charged with recklessly causing the death of her daughter Aniya Zamora, who was three years old at the time of her death on April 19, 2013.

— On October 7, 2014, an Indictment was filed in Marion County Circuit Court charging Mercedes Alvarado with Manslaughter in the Second Degree.

Mercedes Alvarado, 25, is charged with recklessly causing the death of her daughter Aniya Zamora, who was three years old at the time of her death on April 19, 2013.

Mercedes Alvarado was subsequently arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office on a warrant issued for that charge.

Manslaughter in the Second Degree is a Class B Felony and a Measure 11 offense that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 75 months in prison.

The crime requires proof that the defendant recklessly caused the death of another human being.

Mercedes Alvarado is currently being held at the Marion County Jail with no bail and will appear for arraignment on October 8, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Marion County Court Annex, 4000 Aumsville Highway, Salem.

The circumstances surrounding Aniya Zamora's death continue to be investigated by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Grand Jury.
