At the time of the accident, it was raining heavily and dark out
(SALEM, Ore) — Last night at about 6:48 pm, Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to Swegle Rd NE and Cordon Rd NE regarding a jogger struck by a car.
The 16 year old jogger was heading west on Swegle Rd, when the vehicle struck him from behind.
At the time of the accident, it was raining heavily and dark out.
The jogger was dressed in all black with no reflective gear, which made him very difficult for the driver to see due to the weather conditions and the lights of oncoming traffic.
The 16 year old jogger was transported by ambulance and the driver remained on the scene cooperating with deputies and their investigation.
Driving in the rain, especially at night, can pose some serious challenges.
Rain reduces the effectiveness of your headlights and causes poor visibility.
A few tips to prepare for winter driving, replace your wipers every six months, and use water repellant on your windshield, side windows and mirrors.
Make sure your headlights are in good working order and if you replace one, replace them both.
The Marion County Sherrif's Office would like to encourage citizens, when jogging in the dark to always run against traffic and choose well lit routes.
Be visible, wear white, yellow or orange clothing, and also make sure you have reflective gear on and even a headlamp is a good idea.
