— A manufactured home in Mehama was destroyed by a fire on Thursday.

The Stayton Fire District says they responded to a home on fire just before 11:30 a.m. in the 21200 block of Ferry Road.

First arriving firefighters found half of the home engulfed in flames, and spreading quickly due to strong east winds. Twenty one firefighters, including fire crews from Lyons and Sublimity, were able to have the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire, and a cat in a pet carrier on the front porch was rescued before fire personnel arrived.

The building, and its contents were a total loss fire officials said.

The American Red Cross is helping the one occupant with essential needs.

The fire was accidental, and caused by embers from a metal fire pit adjacent to the manufactured home.

Firefighters from around the state want to remind everyone that fire conditions remain extreme, and to make sure any outdoor fire pits are completely extinguished when not attended.
