(PORTLAND, Ore. ) — Monday evening at just before 6:30 p.m., Portland firefighters were called to an motor vehicle accident on the North Marine Drive exit from I-5 south.
When firefighters arrived they found an overturned semi tractor and trailer on the ramp. The truck was reportedly carrying a 75,000 lb piece of metal. The semi trucks driver was pinned in the vehicles cab which was crushed against a "Jersey" type barrier.
Firefighters worked for just over 30 minutes to free the conscious driver.
The man was transported to Emanuel Hospital, and was entered into the trauma system. Patients who experience or have a high risk for multi-system trauma are often entered into the trauma system. This ensures that they are sent to one of Oregon's two Trauma Centers (Legacy Emanuel Medical Center or Oregon Health & Science University Hospital).
The exit ramp is expected to re-open at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning while crews work to clean up the wreck, and evaluate the damage.
