ODFW is holding free pheasant hunts for youth hunters under age 17.
ODFW and partners stock pheasants at these special hunts that give youth a head start on regular pheasant seasons, which don’t begin until October. Quail and dove can also be hunted.
Every spring in March, I head east to hunt jackrabbits in the area around Christmas Valley and Hampton. That’s about a 4 hour ride from Salem, either straight east on Highway 20 to Hampton or south out of Bend on Hwy 97 and then head east on Hwy 31 just south of La Pine. This region of high desert sage and juniper is home to many a skittish bunny.
This time of year isn’t just for Easter egg hunting. Many Oregonians are in the outdoors looking for another seasonal treat– shed antlers.
Oregon’s male deer and elk naturally shed their antlers at this time of year (only to regrow them in spring and summer). Buck deer usually shed theirs from late December through March, and bull elk from late February through early April.
Hunter information booths will be open across central Oregon in early October to provide the public with current fire restriction information on open fires, driving off road, chainsaw use, smoking in the forest, and more.
Tests have confirmed that deer in the Roseburg area are dying from Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, a disease that has not been seen in deer in this area of Oregon before.
Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is asking for the public's help for information to identify the person(s) responsible for the unlawful killing of three black tail bucks on Lake Creek Road in Eagle Point in Jackson County.
Are you new to hunting or out of practice? Let the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife help show you how to enjoy this sport before fall hunting seasons kick off later this year.
