— The Oregon State men’s soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit, as the Beavers fell to Marquette 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.

Both sides were receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll coming into the weekend.

“It was a very even game and we were a bit unfortunate in the way the goal came about,” said head coach Steve Simmons. “I thought the boys were brave going forward and they deserved more from the game. All in all, this team will win many games if they continue to produce moments like they did today.”

Marquette (2-2-0) took an early lead when it converted a penalty kick less than four minutes into the contest. The Beavers (3-1-0) had a number of scoring chances in the opening frame, but were unable to convert, as Golden Eagle goalkeeper Charlie Lyon made a pair of saves in the first 45 minutes of action.

Freshman goalkeeper Nolan Wirth recorded three saves on the day, including a leaping save on a swerving shot late in the first half. Wirth has not allowed a goal from open play in his three starts this season.

Senior Khiry Shelton finished the match with three shots, as the Beavers out-shot the Golden Eagles 10-9. Oregon State held Marquette to two shots in the second half, neither of which was on goal.

With the victory, Marquette wins the 2014 Milwaukee Panther Invitational.
