While playing in their sixth-straight road contest to begin the 2014 season, the Warriors suffered just their second loss.
(FOREST GROVE, Ore. ) — The Corban University women's soccer team traveled to play Pacific University on Sunday afternoon, and in a tight non-conference affair, the Warriors fell to the Boxers, 1-0.
While playing in their sixth-straight road contest to begin the 2014 season, the Warriors suffered just their second loss, with both defeats coming via the one-nil score line.
The Boxers (2-1) scored the game's lone goal in the 30th minute when Kara Lankey found the back of the net from about one yard out off of a cross from McKenna Davidson.
At the half, Pacific led Corban 6-3 in shots, and 7-1 in corner kicks.
In the second stanza, the Warriors tried to press the issue and tie the contest, but the Boxer defense stood strong, holding Corban to just four shots in the final 45 minutes, ultimately keeping the Warriors off of the scoreboard.
For the match, Pacific outshot Corban, 12-7, and held an 8-3 corner-kicks advantage.
Leading the way offensively for the Warriors was junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.), as she racked up three of Corban's seven shots, with two going on frame.
Playing in her second collegiate match of her career, freshman goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) tallied four saves in the loss.
"Pacific was just a bit better than us today," stated head women's soccer coach Marty Ziesemer. "We seemed to be a step behind and that determined the outcome of the game. However, I was pleased with how we battled to the end and we were just unfortunate to not put one away towards the end. We have to keep getting better and be ready for a tough couple of matches in Utah."
Corban (3-2-1) returns to action next Saturday and Sunday when it competes in the Westminster Invitational.
The Warriors take on Northwestern College (Iowa) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., before playing the hosts, Westminster College, on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
