(SALEM, Ore. ) — Corban University head baseball coach, Jeff McKay, announced the addition of three newcomers to the 2014 recruiting class on Monday afternoon, bringing the group to a total of 14 players.
Scott Weidlich – 6' 0" – INF – Reynolds High School – Ore.
Hailing from Portland, Ore., Weidlich enrolls in the Warrior program with two years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Clackamas Community College (2013-14) and Clark College (2012-2013). In high school, he earned All-League honors both his junior and senior year.
Weidlich is set to major in Health Science.
"Scott provides infield depth for us with most of his experience at 3B and 1B at the junior college level," said McKay. "He is a great fit for Corban, and he brings a mature personality with strong character."
Sam Martin – 6' 1" – LHP – Gervais High School – Ore.
Martin joins the Corban baseball program after attending Chemeketa Community College from 2012-13 followed by the College of Southern Nevada in 2013. In high school, he pitched his way to All-West Valley League honors as a senior. An all-around athlete, Martin was a two-time district champion in wrestling and qualified for the 3A State Tournament on three separate occasions. He will have four more years of eligibility as a Warrior.
Martin plans to become a Language Arts Education major at Corban.
"We had interest in Sam out of high school," commented McKay. "We are looking forward to working with him. He has some catching up to do having not pitched in the last couple of years. We needed to add depth in young left-handed pitching and Sam helps fill that need."
Nic Coffman – 6' 3" – 3B – Wilson High School – Ore.
Coffman heads to Corban with two years of eligibility remaining after playing at Lane Community College. He registered a .309 batting average and compiled 21 RBIs during his freshman campaign. Coffman also spent some time pitching, as he threw 20.1 innings and walked only three batters. He garnered South Region All-League honors and was selected to attend the 'Sophomore Showcase' in 2012.
"We are excited to have Nic," stated McKay. "He has big upside with the bat that has potential to hit in the middle of our order. We needed to add power from our infield positions, and Nic does that. He can be a plus defender also. Nic was drafted by the Oakland A's out of high school, so that shows how good of ability he brings to Corban Baseball."
