Corban (2-3-1, 0-1-1 CCC) returns to the pitch on Tuesday when it faces The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash.
(EUGENE, Ore. ) — The Corban University men's soccer team surrendered an early goal via a penalty kick on Saturday evening, and ultimately could only come back and score one goal en route to a 1-1 draw with Northwest Christian University (NCU) in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) match.
Despite racking up a season-high 34 shots while allowing only 10, the Warriors could not find the finishing touch in the waning moments when they needed to, resulting in the tie.
For the Warriors, it is their fourth-straight game scoring one goal, and it is the third time in four matches that the squad has surrendered the first goal of the game. In the team's two wins to open the 2014 campaign, Corban scored twice inside of two minutes in the first match of the year en route to a 3-0 victory, and once inside of four minutes in their second 3-0 triumph during the season-opening road trip.
In Saturday's match, Angel Sandoval scored a penalty kick in the third minute of play for NCU after the Warriors had been whistled for a handball in the 18-yard box.
Showing a strong response however, the Warriors remained unfazed on the field, dictating the pace of play during the remainder of the half while earning an 11-5 shots advantage. The tying goal eventually came for Corban in the 39th minute when sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) used a nice piece of individual skill to blow past a trio of NCU defenders en route to ripping a left-footed shot into the back of the net. For Dinnall, it was his second goal of the year.
In the second stanza, Corban really starting pouring on the pressure, hitting shot after shot at the NCU (1-2-2) goal, but the Beacon goalkeeper was up to the challenge, making 12 saves throughout the course of the contest. Corban ended up putting the ball into the back of the net on a few occasions, but had the goals called back due to it being offside or a foul.
The Warriors came closest to taking the lead when sophomore midfielder Kemar Prince (Kingston, Jamaica) found senior forward Arsinio Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) with a chipped pass in the box, and after chest-trapping the ball and letting it bounce once, Walker ripped a scissor kick off of the crossbar.
In that second half, Corban outshot Northwest Christian, 17-2, but was unable to find the breakthrough, sending the contest to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Walker had another good opportunity, but his shot was saved and the chance diminished. With the score still tied, the two conference foes battled it out in a second overtime stanza, and both sides registered a number of good opportunities down to the final whistle, but it was not to be, as the score ended level at 1-1.
Dinnall led the way offensively with nine shots off of the bench for Corban, while Walker and Prince combined to total 11.
In goal, senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) made four key saves while playing the full 110 minutes.
"The group did a decent job of creating chances while limiting NCU's tonight," said head coach Aaron Lewis. "Our percentage of shots on goal needs to improve as we look to put balls in the net."
