(SALEM, Ore. ) — The Corban University women's soccer team finally played in its first home match of the 2014 campaign, and with the offense firing on all cylinders, the Warriors scored a season-high five goals on Saturday en route to a 5-1 trouncing of Trinity Lutheran College (Wash.).
Leading the way on the day was freshman forward Sadee Kallis (Yakima, Wash.), as she scored two goals en her first-ever game at Warrior Field.
The Warriors (5-3-1) began the match on the front foot, applying pressure with a flurry of shots early on. Corban opened the scoring in the seventh minute when sophomore midfielder Emily Larick (Redlands, Calif.) laced a shot over the Eagles' goalkeeper and into the back of the net to put the Warriors up 1-0.
Despite the continued onslaught of shots and offensive prowess that Corban displayed over the next several minutes, it was Trinity Lutheran (0-8) who scored next, as Alex Chick curved a corner kick into the goal to tie the contest at 1-1.
Immediately, however, Corban responded when Kallis came off the bench and received a long pass over the top of the Eagle defense from sophomore defender Kaylyn Siobal (Waipahu, Hawaii), and Kallis slotted her shot into the bottom left corner of the goal to help the Warriors regain the advantage.
At the halftime break, the score remained 2-1, with the Warriors outshooting the Eagles, 21-5.
The second half began with Corban continuing to press the issue in search of the third goal. That score came in the 57th minute when junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) headed a corner kick from senior defender Emily Anderson (Salem, Ore.) into the back of the net. For Fekkes, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the campaign.
Just 10 seconds later, junior midfielder Randi Donahue (Bellingham, Wash.) stole the ball from a Trinity Lutheran defender and beat another player en route to calmly slotting her shot past the Eagles' goalkeeper to make it 4-1. For Donahue, it was her first score this season.
Those two goals in quick succession effectively sealed the win for Corban, but Kallis decided to add one more for good measure, as after a nifty piece of footwork inside the 18-yard box, she blasted a left-footed shot into the right side-netting to make it 5-1 in the 71st minute of play. For Kallis, it was her second of the day and third of the campaign.
For the match, Corban outshot Trinity Lutheran, 33-7, with 18 of those shots going on frame. Donahue led the Warriors with 10 shots on the afternoon, while Fekkes and Kallis followed behind with five and four shots, respectively.
Corban returns to action on Thursday, September 25, when it opens its Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) campaign against Warner Pacific College in Portland. Kickoff against the Knights is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
