— The Oregon State women’s soccer team hit the crossbar twice, but was unable to find the net, as it fell 1-0 to Eastern Michigan on Sunday at Paul Lorenz Field.

“I think we came out a little bit flat, and we had some difficulty making tactical adjustments in the first half,” said head coach Linus Rhode.

“We were able to make those adjustments in the second half, and that helped us build some momentum. Overall there were some good moments, but we started a little too flat and we got punished for it. I think playing overtime on Friday had an effect on us today, but if we’d come out with the type of urgency we had in the last 20 minutes, it would have been a different game. With that said, I have to give credit to Eastern Michigan; I think they played some good soccer.”

Eastern Michigan (3-2-1) got on the score-sheet early on, finding the net in the ninth minute. Madison Hirsch played a pass from the left side to Megan Trapp at the top of the box. Trapp proceeded to fire a shot from 18 yards out that reached the back of the net to give the Eagles an early lead.

Oregon State (0-4-2) responded by creating some good scoring opportunities in the first half. Freshman Maddie Misi came close to scoring in the 28th minute, hitting a shot from the top of the box that forced a diving save from the Eastern Michigan goalkeeper. As a team, Oregon State outshot the Eagles 8-6 in the opening frame.

The Beavers produced a number of scoring chances in the second half as well, highlighted by a pair of shots that pinged off the crossbar. The first came in the 66th minute, when freshman Emma Bergstrom fired a shot from outside the box that rattled the woodwork. Sophomore Helene Haavik followed that up with a long-range effort in the 88th minute that looked as though it might dip into the goal, but instead hit the crossbar and bounced back into play.

Freshman goalkeeper Bella Geist made six saves in the contest, bringing her season total to 40.

The Beavers will return to action Friday, when they hit the road to take on Florida International in Miami.
