— Former Oregon State cross country and track and field letter winner Erin Jones won the bronze medal in the U-23 age division on Sunday at the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final race at Hawrelak Park in Edmonton, Alberta.

A Hood River native now living in Colorado Springs, Jones finished the combination 1,500-meter swim, 43.2-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run course in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 59 seconds. She trailed the lead pack of seven by more than a minute after the biking portion of the race, but ran her way back into medal contention.

“It was amazing, I felt great,” said Jones, who lettered three times in track and cross country in 2009-12 before enrolling in the Elite Triathlon Academy. “Our team did awesome and it was a huge motivation for us to go hard today.”

Jones graduated this past June. She is a member of the U.S. National triathlon team and hopes to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. She will train in Arizona this winter.
