(SALEM, Ore.) — State Representative Betty Komp (D-Woodburn) has been selected to serve on a national education reform study group.
The Study Group on International Education Models was formed by the National Conference of State Legislatures and will be made up of lawmakers and legislative policy staff from across the nation. The group will analyze education policy from some of the top-performing countries in the world and determine which elements of their education systems could be included in states’ school reform measures.
“I’ve spent my career as an educator trying to improve Oregon’s schools so our young people have the skills they need to succeed,” said Komp. “In the legislature, most of my work has focused on getting better results in education. This selection is both an honor and an opportunity: it’s a chance to build on the work we’ve done and continue improving so every Oregon student graduates prepared for today’s economy.”
The study group begins its work this week with meetings from September 3-6, and will complete its analysis in late 2015.
Komp serves as the Co-chair of the joint Education Sub-Committee of Ways and Means, where she helped pass the largest school budget in the history of Oregon. She has led a number of education reform efforts including efforts to reduce the cost of administration so more investments go directly to the classroom.
Komp also serves as the House Speaker Pro-Tempore. She is in her fifth term.
