By halftime, the shot count was in favor of Corban, 8-0, while the Warriors also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.
(SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ) — With freshman midfielder Alanna Robinson (Sagle, Idaho) leading the way, the Corban University Warriors dominated Northwestern College (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon as a part of the Westminster Invitational, 3-1. While the score-line was just a two-goal difference, Corban outshot Northwestern for the game, 16-2.
In Corban's seventh game of its eight-match road stint to open the campaign, the Warriors earned their fourth win by applying the offensive pressure early. With the momentum completely in the Warriors' favor, the goal finally came in the 23rd minute.
On the goal-scoring play, Robinson put the Warriors in front when she headed home a corner kick from sophomore defender Kaylyn Siobal (Waipahu, Hawaii). For Robinson, it was her first-career collegiate goal, while for Siobal, it marked her second assist thus far on the campaign.
By halftime, the shot count was in favor of Corban, 8-0, while the Warriors also held the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1.
The second half looked very similar to the first, with Corban dominating all over the field. Siobal decided to do it herself the next time she was down the field, scoring in the 70th minute to double Corban's advantage. Junior midfielder Randi Donahue (Bellingham, Wash.) garnered the assist on the play.
Northwestern (1-5-0) halved the deficit, however, scoring in the 76th minute of play on a shot 20 yards from goal.
Just four minutes later in the 80th minute though, Robinson sealed the match for the Warriors as she registered her second goal of the game after junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) crossed a ball in from the right side.
That was more than enough, as the Warriors finished strong for the two-goal victory, holding the 16-2 shot-count advantage and a 14-1 corner-kick edge.
"It took a bit for us to get into the game, but once we did we played well," said head women's soccer coach Marty Ziesemer. "I was very happy with our passing and movement off the ball. Younger players are getting some valuable experience and it is great to watch them continue to improve. We were able to get some of our injured players back and they were able to contribute. We have a tough game tomorrow against a solid Westminster program. We will be challenged and will have to be even better."
The Warriors (4-2-1) have a quick turnaround and play again on Sunday morning against the host school of the tournament, Westminster College (5-0-1). Kickoff is set for 9:00 a.m. PST.
