Corban (3-1-1) returns to action on Sunday, September 7, when it travels to Forest Grove, Ore., for a non-conference match with the Pacific University Boxers.
(LACEY, Wash.) — Playing in its fifth road contest of its eight-game road swing to begin the 2014 campaign, the Corban University women's soccer team tied NCAA Division II opponent, Saint Martin's University, on Thursday afternoon, 1-1.
The Saints opened the scoring in the sixth minute, leaving the Warriors in an early hole.
Junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) responded not long after for Corban, tying the contest at 1-1 in the 27th minute. On the play, junior midfielder Randi Donahue (Bellingham, Wash.) registered the assist for the Warriors.
Neither team scored for the remainder for the half, leaving the score level at the break. During the first 45 minutes, Corban outshot Saint Martin's, 7-3, while also holding a 3-0 corner-kicks advantage.
The two sides traded opportunities in the second stanza, but still, neither team was able to find the breakthrough in regular time, sending the contest to overtime.
In a very back-and-forth pair of extra periods, both sides recorded opportunities and shots, but the goal was not to be breached again on either end, ending the game in a 1-1 draw.
On the afternoon, Corban outshot Saint Martin's, 14-11, and held the corner-kicks advantage, 6-4. Fekkes led the way offensively for the Warriors with four shots.
In goal, freshman goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) registered six saves in her collegiate debut with the Warriors.
"We are a bit disappointed to come away with a tie," commented head women's soccer coach Marty Ziesemer. "We had our opportunities, and we just didn't capitalize on our chances. Saint Martin's played a solid game and it was great to be challenged and put under pressure and watch how we dealt with them."
