Oregon State Running Backs Wear Down San Diego State in 28-7 Win
Sean Mannion completed 24 of 31passes to 10 different receivers for 275 yards and increased his career total to 11,339 yards.
(CORVALLIS, Ore. ) — Tailbacks Terron Ward and Storm Woods each scored twice and Oregon State wore down San Diego State 28-7 on Saturday night before a crowd of 41,339 at Reser Stadium.
Senior quarterback Sean Mannion displaced former OSU star Derek Anderson (2001-04) in first place atop the school career passing yardage list on a 27-yard connection with Hunter Jarmon with 11:20 left in the third quarter that gave him 11,263 yards at that point. He also assumed third place on the all-time Pac-12 list on the same play.
Mannion completed 24 of 31passes to 10 different receivers for 275 yards and increased his career total to 11,339 yards. USC’s Matt Barkley is the all-time leader with 12,274 yards; USC’s Carson Palmer is second at 11,818.
The Beavers did not need a 300-yard performance from Mannion on this night, however. Woods (11-52) and Ward (15-50) combined for 102 rushing yards and the defense completely stifled the Aztecs after surrendering a touchdown their opening drive.
Ward scored on runs of 12 and two yards, Woods on runs of five and two yards. Steven Nelson and Michael Doctor added interceptions and the Beavers had three sacks for 20 yards in losses. SDSU gained 75 yards on its first drive and then had just 140 the rest of the way.
“That was a good win,” OSU coach Mike Riley said. “We had a speaker last night talk about perseverance and that came into play today.
“We had to stay with it because it didn’t look very good early. There were some fantastic defensive plays after we got past that first drive.
“It was a hard game. We wanted to run the ball because we knew it would be hard if we had to pass protect all game.”
SDSU had three sacks in the first quarter but none thereafter.
“Sean adjusted, we got rid of the ball quicker,” Riley said. ‘We rushed for 10 times of the amount we had against them last year. Even though 100 yards isn’t great we were pretty effective.”
SDSU took a 7-0 lead with 11:27 left in the first quarter on a 2-yard scoring run by tailback Donnel Pumphrey. OSU replied with Ward’s 12-yard run with five seconds left in the first quarter to even the score 7-7. Mannion’s 32-yard hookup with Hunter Jarmon was the big play on the 70-yard drive.
Ward scored again on a 2-yard run with 27 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Beavers a 14-7 intermission lead. Mannion’s 49-yard pass to Rahmel Dockery on the previous play positioned OSU for the go-ahead score.
Woods’ 5-yard TD run made it 21-7 with 9:58 left in the third quarter. The record-setting pass to Jarmon set up the score. A 2-yard TD run by Woods made it 28-7 with 1:16 left in the third quarter and completed the scoring.
The Beavers open Pac-12 Conference play against USC on Sept. 27 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PDT; it will be televised by ESPN.
