Oregon State Sophomore Devonte Small was involved in both goals, tallying a goal and an assist in the match.
(MILWAUKEE, Wis.) — The Oregon State men’s soccer team moved to a perfect 3-0-0 Friday night, as the Beavers took a 2-0 victory over a UW-Milwaukee team that is receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll.
Sophomore Devonte Small was involved in both goals, tallying a goal and an assist in the match. Freshman Jordan Jones also got on the board, scoring the first goal of his collegiate career to seal the victory.
“This was a great win on the road in a tough place to play,” said head coach Steve Simmons. “Right from the get-go we put them on the back foot. We came out with a lot of energy and intent, and I think it showed with two goals in the first half.”
The Beavers had a few early scoring opportunities, and were finally able to break through in the 24th minute on a goal from Jones. The Beaver forward scored his first goal of the season on a one-touch effort off a cross from Small. Senior Khiry Shelton was also credited with an assist on the goal, bringing his total to seven points this season.
Oregon State put another goal on the board less than six minutes later, and this time it was Small getting on the score-sheet. The sophomore dribbled at his defender before cutting onto his right foot to fire a strike from 30-yards out the snuck under the crossbar to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Both sides had chances in the second half, but neither team was able to capitalize, as freshman goalkeeper Nolan Wirth kept the Panthers off the board to secure his second-straight clean sheet.
“Overall I think it was a mature performance by our team,” Simmons said. “We took control of the game, and we took the crowd out of it. It was a classic road victory for us.”
Junior transfer Jaime Velasco made his first appearance for the Orange and Black, playing 38 minutes in the contest.
The Beavers will return to action on Sunday, when they face Marquette in Milwaukee.
