— In an effort to improve ADA accessibility as well as improve the overall look of the Cherriots system, Salem-Keizer Transit is moving forward with a Bus Stop Improvement Project.

This project will be broken into phases, with the first phase focusing on four of our main corridors.  These corridors include River Road corridor, Market Street corridor, Broadway corridor and Center Street corridor. The second phase has not yet been determined; however the goal of this project is to address all of the bus stops in the Cherriots system.

Proposed improvements will vary at each stop based on many different factors, but may include installation or replacement of concrete strips to provide ADA accessibility, shelter pad construction, shelter installation or replacement, trash receptacles, bus signage and Simme-seats.

Progress to Date:

All stops to receive improvements in phase one have been identified.  Additionally the specific improvements at each of those stops have been decided.  The decision on what improvement will occur at each stop was made based on a number of different factors which include the stop location, ridership at the stop, amenities surrounding the stop, etc.

Currently the Federal Transit Administration as well as the State Historic Preservation Office is reviewing the required Section 106 documentation that Salem-Keizer Transit has provided for the project.  Section 106 was required due to the minimal ground disturbance associated with the concrete work at some of the stops.

Project Cost & Funding:

Salem-Keizer received funding from two sources for the Bus Stop Improvement project. The Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments approved a total of $695,380 from the Surface Transportation Program. The Oregon Transportation Commission awarded us a Flexible Funds grant for $1.9 million. Salem-Keizer Transit's match for the project is $289,589.

Fare Increase Proposed:

Salem-Keizer Transit is considering fare increases for Cherriots, CARTS, CherryLift and RED Line services. Please see this chart for a list of specific changes: Proposed Fare Increase 2015.pdfThe proposed fares would take effect on January 5, 2015.

We’re also considering selling passes in new easy ways:

  • One to 14 Cherriots day passes loaded onto an electronic swipe card
  • Ten Cherriots bus trips loaded onto an electronic swipe card
  • The ability to purchase multiple 30-day passes (for example, 60, 90 or 120 days) on one electronic swipe card

Would you find it useful to be able to purchase your fares in these new ways? Please share that information with us!

Your input will shape how we sell passes. We are also accepting comments on fare increases. Public comments on these proposals will be accepted until October 23, 2014. Comments may be submitted online, by emailing info@cherriots.org or by contacting Linda Galeazzi, executive assistant, at 503-588-2424.
