— The Keizer Fire District responded to a boat fire Saturday afternoon at the Keizer Rapids Park along the Willamette River, a first in the department's history.

Salem News Journal was on scene as firefighters battled the flames that destroyed the 1954 Chris Craft boat that was anchored at the dock.

Firefighters told SNJ that the fire started after a mechanical problem occurred onboard near the rear of the boat.

One of the men associated with the boat stayed onboard to try and put the fire out, but was not successful and suffered burns to his feet and legs, and was transported to Salem Hospital in good condition.

The Polk County Marine Patrol, BC Towing, and the City of Salem Pollution Control helped during the incident.

The boat was a total loss. No firefighters, or other people were injured in the incident.
