Corban returns to action on Friday to take on Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls, Ore. at 7:00 p.m.
(ASHLAND, Ore.) — In its conference-opening match, the Corban University volleyball team couldn't recover from a 0.023 attack percentage and fell to Southern Oregon University in straight sets (13-25, 12-25, 14-25).
The match marked the Warriors' fourth-straight loss.
Corban (3-5, 0-1 CCC) managed to keep pace early on, as a kill by freshman outside hitter Shantelle Hill (Pasco, Wash.) and a pair of attack errors by Southern Oregon aided a small Warrior run to cut the deficit to three (7-10). However, the Raiders went on to score 13 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 23-10 lead. A Corban service error gave Southern Oregon the opening set, 13-25.
In the second set, the Warriors showed signs of life, as the Navy and Gold opened with a quick 4-1 run capped off by a service ace by junior defensive specialist Kelsey Wright (Beaverton, Ore.). But Southern Oregon (7-2, 1-0) responded again, this time using a 17-3 run to take control. The Warriors dropped the second set, 12-25.
After a kill by Miller and an attack error by Southern Oregon, the Warriors found themselves in a 5-5 third-set tie. However, Corban would only register three more kills en route to losing, 14-25.
"Tonight was a good opportunity for the team, and especially the freshmen, to compete against one of the top teams in the conference and experience the speed of the collegiate game," stated head volleyball coach Tracy Smith.
As a team, the Warriors compiled 19 kills, 26 digs, and 19 assists in the match. Hill led the offensive attack with six kills and a 0.231 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Haley Meili (Eugene, Ore.) tallied her sixth double-figure match in a row with 10 assists. Defensively, senior libero Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) garnered team-high honors with seven digs.
"Everyone worked hard for each point and we're looking forward to the Oregon Tech match tomorrow," commented Smith.
