(HONOLULU) — The Western Oregon University soccer team wrapped up its Hawaii business trip with a dramatic 1-0 victory at Chaminade University Saturday.
In the Silverswords' season-opener, the Wolves (2-2) got a goal late and held CU scoreless for 90 minutes. WOU's Amanda Rose Johnson found the back of the net in the 80th minute. Johnson, Western Oregon's usual goalkeeper, played in a different role Saturday. Taylor Higa recorded her third assist of the season on the goal.
After both sides took three shots in the first half, the Wolves had an 8-4 advantage in the second. WOU also had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.
Both of JoEllen DeLeon's shots were on goal for Western Oregon. Higa and Caitlin Castillo both took two shots as well. The Silverswords' (0-1) Twyla Hamaski took a game-high three shots.
Hillary Lutz made four saves in the net for WOU, while Chaminade's Lauren Ishii also saved four shots.
Western Oregon returns home for its Great Northwest Athletic Conference season-opener Thursday. The Wolves welcome Montana State Billings for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
