— The Marion County Public Works Department and Marion County Sheriff's Office wants you to Be Aware! of a construction project near Auburn Elementary School in Salem that will not be completed before the school year starts.

Marion County Public Works Department says due to delays, the Auburn Road sidewalk and bike lane project will continue until at least October.

Marion County Public Works crews and the contractor, R & R General Contractors, will be working closely with personnel at Auburn Elementary School, the Salem-Keizer School District, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office, to ensure safe vehicle and pedestrian passage for children to and from school.

Flaggers will continue to direct traffic through the work area when construction activities require the contractor to close a lane of traffic during the work shift. Please remember that flaggers are there for your safety as well as the safety of the construction crew. Pedestrian access will be maintained and monitored in designated areas by school crossing guards.

Police encourage parents to continue to allow your children to walk and bike to school as they have in the past. Unnecessarily driving them to school can actually increase the risk to pedestrians by creating added congestion and even gridlock at times, police said.
