(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. ) — California Lutheran University scored just over 15 minutes into the second half, and the Regals held on a 1-0 victory over Willamette University at the Best Western Inn Thousand Oaks Classic on Sunday.
CLU upped its record to 1-0-1, while Willamette fell to 0-2.
The game's only goal was netted by Bianca Deardorff of CLU at 60:32 following a corner kick. She was assisted on the play by Charlotte Rosen.
California Lutheran achieved a 10-8 advantage in total shots, but the Bearcats owned a 4-3 margin in shots on goal. The Regals outshot the Bearcats 4-2 in the first half, but both teams took six shots in the second half.
WU goalkeeper Emily Sewall (So., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) earned two saves, while the Regals' goalie, Kristin Bailey, finished with four saves.
The Regals gained a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. All three of their corners were earned in the second half after the Bearcats received the only corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
Deardorff topped CLU with three total shots. Sarah Desautels (Sr., MF/F, Snohomish, WA/Glacier Park HS) and Emmy Manset (Fr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) each contributed three shots for Willamette. Manset placed all three of her shots on goal, forcing Bailey to record saves. Two of the saves on shots by Manset were in the 53rd and 54th minutes.
Willamette will return to action with the Bearcats' home opener on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Warner Pacific College. Game time at Sparks Field is slated for 7:00 p.m. PDT.
