Reps. Wilson And Parrish Call For CPR Training For Teachers
Measure Requires life-saving training for educators; Legislators Call For Bill To Be Referred to “Live” Committee

Recently, the Oregon Legislature passed a bill to require that high schools teach students critical life-saving skills, including CPR.

HB 3558, filed this week by Representatives Carl Wilson (RGrants Pass) and Julie Parrish (R-West Linn), would require teachers be certified in CPR, as well. The bill has been referred to the House Education committee, where previous attempts to enact such legislation have been stonewalled.

The Oregon House today voted 50-10 to approve House Bill 2879, which will allow pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptives and birth control pills, greatly increasing access.

High levels of algae toxin detected at the Detroit Reservoir prompted the Oregon Health Authority on May 15 to issue a warning to avoid its waters. The warning was lifted the following week, but the incident served as a reminder that the North Santiam River and its tributaries can sometimes hold blue-green algae toxins.

Governor Kate Brown today declared drought emergencies in eight additional Oregon counties due to drought, low snow pack levels, and low water conditions. The new counties are Deschutes, Grant, Jackson, Josephine, Lane, Morrow, Umatilla, and Wasco.

Salem Police Detectives have arrested two suspects in the death of a subject in South Salem on the evening of May 20. Salem Police were called to a residence in the 2000 block of Robins Ln SE at approximately 9:19 pm on a report of a physical altercation at that location.

The Oregon Health Authority has lifted a health advisory issued May 15 for Detroit Lake, located 46 miles southeast of Salem on the North Santiam River in Linn and Marion counties. Water monitoring has confirmed the level of blue-green algae and any associated toxins are well below guideline values for human exposure.

Umatilla County High Speed Persuit Ends in Arrest

An early morning pursuit with Oregon State Troopers in Umatilla County leads to the arrest of two individuals on multiple charges. According to Sergeant Mark Banks, a trooper attempted to stop a vehicle on HWY 11 south of Milton-Freewater for an equipment violation on May 18th at about 12:07AM.

Firefighters Extricate Drivers Involved in Collision

At 9:18pm Friday TVF&R firefighters responded to multiple reports of a vehicle accident on Murray Blvd near Terman Road. On arrival crews found three involved vehicles, two with significant damage.

High toxin levels found in reservoir in Linn and Marion counties. A health advisory is being issued today for Detroit Lake, located 46 miles southeast of Salem on the North Santiam River in Linn and Marion counties. Water monitoring has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae and the toxins they produce.

UPDATE: Police are still hoping that someone in the public may know something to lead them to the whereabouts of Vergie Mae Henry. Salem Police Detectives are asking for assistance from the public as they search for 66-year old Virgie Mae Henry. Virgie does not have a permanent address, but she was most recently staying with an acquaintance in southeast Salem.

At 9:46 PM this evening, Marion County Fire District No. 1 was dispatched to a reported residential fire at 638 Lancaster Drive NE, near Durbin Avenue SE. Upon arrival, initial crews discovered a fully involved house fire that was immediately threatening the neighbors home that was approximately 10 feet away. The incident commander upgraded the incident to a second alarm bring additional firefighters to the scene to help suppress the fire and protect the neighboring home.
